Over nine people have died and eight others are nursing serious injuries after a matatu they were travelling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Reports stated that the IED had been planted by people believed to be Al Shabaab allies. The number of casualties still remain unclear as further investigations are underway.
According to one of the witnesses, the incident occured at around 0600hrs on Monday, January 31 morning.
North Eastern Regional Commander George Seda, stated that the residents who were also utilizing the route in the morning hours also reported the incident. He assured the residents that they were working towards establishing what has really transpired. He also reported that no arrests had been made following the incident.
The incident comes barely a week after the French embassy, German embassy among other several embassies cautioned its citizens to be alert and take precaution in warning of the looming terror attack in the country.
