Rwanda accuses DR Congo of attacking its borders and kidnapping 2 soldiers
Rwandan Army, the Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) has accused the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for for attacking it’s border, and kidnapping two of its (Rwandan) soldiers.
The incident which Rwanda described as “provocative aggression,” is said to have occurred on May 23.“Following the provocative aggression by FARDC on 23 May 22, where multiple rockets were fired on Rwandan territory, FARDC with FDLR attacked RDF along our border, and two Rwanda Defence Force soldiers were kidnapped while on patrol,” said RDF in a brief statement this Saturday afternoon.
“We have since located these two soldiers: Cpl Nkundabagenzi Elysee and Pte Ntwari Gad being held by FDLR in Eastern DRC. We call upon authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo that work closely with these genocidal armed groups to secure the release of the RDF soldiers,” it added.
RDF has made the call just hours after the Democratic Republic of Congo announced “retaliatory” measures against Rwanda, among them suspension of the latter’s national carrier Rwanda Air from Congolese airspace.
DRC accuses Rwanda of among others supporting the M23 rebel group which recently resumed operations in the eastern part of the country.DRC is yet to speak on the alleged kidnaps of Rwandan soldiers.The relations between the two countries remain tense.
Kigali claims the Interahamwe fighters who are blamed for the 1994 genocide are preparing to attack Rwanda.
